Responsive Web Design Series (Part 1) - What is responsive web design

What is Responsive Web Design?

Here at Indigo Web, we are continually enhancing our web design techniques in order to keep abreast of the latest trends in technology.  This year, we’ve been seeing some big changes on the technology front and here’s why.

Since the popularisation of smart-phones, leaders in our industry have been tackling the issue of having smaller devices view websites designed for much larger, higher resolution screens.  Many web design techniques have been presented as potential solutions, with Responsive Web Design being the most widely adopted and most viable.

A responsive website is a website that is designed and developed in such a way that the width of the site scales down, according to the needs of the device.  From smart-phones and tablets all the way through to netbooks and desktop computers, a responsive website will automatically optimise itself to make your viewing more streamlined and user-friendly.

So, why do we care how users are viewing our websites?  Figures are showing that computer sales are dropping for the first time since 2001 and the rate of smart-phone and tablet usage is going through the roof. This trend shows no sign of slowing down looking to the future market. But, the future is here – and so is the need for an effective solution to the issue of mobile devices. Responsive web design has already made a big impact on how we use the internet today. So much so, that Mashable has deemed 2013 the ‘year of responsive web design’. (Source: Mashable)

In a world where your audience can potentially be viewing marketing information from any number of devices, it is important to present your message in a device-agnostic format. By running with the responsive trend, you will have created a streamlined path between you and your client with increased functionality and a better user experience.
